RATHBURN sind vier Herrschaften aus Kanada (drei Lads, und eine Lady an den Drums) die sich 2009 übrs Internet kennenlernten und nun ihre erste EP aufgenommen haben, den Sprung in den Haifischteich Pop Biz genannt wagen.

Laut Marketing Information sind sie von den üblichen Verdächtigen beeinflusst, die man wohl als junge Band mittlerweile nennt: TOOL, ALICE IN CHAINS, DEFTONES, …. Und da man es leid werden kann, Bands zu hören, die entweder einerseits von LED ZEP oder eben von TOOL beeinflusst sind, ohne dass sie irgendeine zusätzlichen Wert beifügen, habe ich die Band kurzerhand damit konfrontiert. Aber zuvor:

Auch wenn sie von den Genannten beeinflusst sind - die alternative Heavy Mucke, die sie hier offerieren ist deutlich weniger elaboriert als man das so von den Meistern TOOL kennt. Zwei Gitarren, in das lange Ausklingen Lassen von Riffs zelebrieren, ab und an ein knurriger Bass, der die Sache vorantreibt. Relativ kurze Stücke, die auch schon mal ein Solo hören lassen, und eigentlich relativ melodisch zu Wege gehen. Sänger Craig ist immer kurz vorm Growl, bleibt aber diesseits; Christine und Shane liefern eine nett-wuchtige Rhythmussektion ab, und Christine ballert die Stücke fröhlich-schlagzeugzerstörend voran; Keith Moon hat eine Auge auf sie.
In All This Time wird's nach den Fingerübungen Deadbeat, Brand und Break Ground doch noch sehr interessant, und man erkennt, dass diese Boyz'n'gal Potential haben. Irgendeiner Growlt sich die Seele aus dem Leib, und wird von einem lieblich-harmonischen Lead Vocal aufgefangen. Gibt er Ruhe - oh nein, zu stoischer Gitarre attackiert er das Songgerüst und den Refrain von rechts und links - das ist sehr spannend und gleichzeitig sehr gut anhörbar gemacht - ein Highlight. Und auf Goodbye versuchen sie ein ähnliches Konzept - nett düster.

Und was sagte Craig nun auf meine Anwurf, die Musik füge dem TOOL Imperium eher wenig added-value hinzu, und ich würde mich freuen, wenn man etwas experimenteller zu Wege ging?

I'm not really sure if I can convince someone that we are more original than we sound. I suppose the music speaks for itself and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinon. If he is looking for my take on our originality, my first response would be that we sound absolutely nothing like anything that is making mainstream radio in Canada these days. We feel that our music combines the edgy alternative sound of the 90s with more aggressive vocals of todays rock and metal. I'm not as familiar with the scene in Germany, but there are few active Canadian bands with a similar sound to us. But I am obviously somewhat biased and maybe we are not as original as we thought? lol.

What is interesting is that most of the feedback we have received from Canada is that our sound is too heavy for mainstream play and they have suggested we mold our sound into the type of music that heard in the mainstream. We are not cool with that since we don't care for 99% of what is played here on the radio. There are a few metal radio shows around, but they are essentially hardcore/death metal, so we are not heavy enough to fit in their format! That kind of leaves us in no man's land!

I can certainly see where Dietrich is coming from though. It was not much of an experimental sound on the EP. We just wrote music that we really love to listen to and it is not much of surprise to us when people hear similarities to our musical influences. What I can say, however, is that our newer songs are evolving into much more of original/experimental sound, particularly the material written by Shane since many of his influences are indie rock/metal bands (as oppose to 90s alternative rock like the rest of us).

In the meantime, if Dietrich is happy to write a review on Through the Noise based on whatever value he sees in it, we are cool with that... as long as >he doesn't rip us to shreds! Haha!"

Interessantes Feedback (und noch dazu sehr nettes dazu für diesen Nichtsnutz von Kritiker!) wirft es doch gleichzeitig ein Licht auf den kanadischen Markt; ich denke, für unsere Verhältnisse hier ist das eher die normale Heavyness, die da durchkommt (natürlich nicht im Pop Radio, aber das ist ja nun wirklich kein Maßstab). Das Feedback erinnert an ähnliches, dass ich von meiner Lieblingsband ONE SOUL THRUST erhalten habe, die ja auch Kanadier sind.
Und zerrissen habe ich sie ja auch nicht, oder? Also möge der dem heavy new stuff zugeneigte Leser dem hier in Ohr gönnen, und wir werden sie im Auge behalten - das kann sicherlich noch interessant werden.
